When we think about keeping our bodies healthy, there are a list of popular activities that instantly spring to mind, swimming, cycling, running, and going to the gym are among them. But what a lot of people fail to realise is that these aren’t the only activities that can help you to give your health a boost. Believe it or not, heading to the gym or going for a swim aren’t your only options for getting in shape, there are plenty of other much more interesting ways to work out, that the chances are you’ve never even considered trying.

You may think that rock climbing is simply an activity loved by adrenaline junkies, but it’s actually so much more than that. The flexibility, fitness and physical strength rock climbing requires, means that it makes an amazing workout. It doesn’t matter where you opt to do it, at an indoor rock climbing centre or on the cliffs or moorland, it offers an incredible workout. Just make sure that you always put yours’ and your climbing buddies’ safety first by always having a fully trained instructor on hand.

Okay, so golf seems to be a leisurely game made for middle-aged men, right? Well, it’s actually much more than that, and believe it or not, offers a hefty workout. A game of 18-hole golf can burn around 300 calories, depending on your weight and whether you carry your own clubs and walk from hole to hole, of course. Not only is golf a great way to stay in shape, but it can also make a fantastic hobby. You never know, if you get good at it, you could even end up winning some golf medals and trophies. Gold tournaments are not only a lot of fun but are also a fantastic way to burn a large amount of calories, especially if you play in multiple games.

Are you someone who loves to walk? Then how about giving orienteering a try? It might sound a little dull, but actually, it can be a lot of fun. You’ll need to get a group of your friends together to do this, as it’s a group activity. The aim is to get yourselves from one location to another with the use of just a map and compass and just the use of your legs. This means that you need to be able to walk over a long distance. The great thing about this type of activity is that it burns a load of calories, builds strength, gets you out in the fresh air, and lets you work out with your friends. What could be better?

These three activities might not seem like they offer the most amazing workouts, but believe it or not, they’re more than a match for the gym or a quick swim. So if you fancy changing up how you workout, give one these a go.
