Holiday Ideas For The Outdoor Adventurer

If lying on the beach or by a pool all day reading a book and sipping cocktails in true dream holiday style is your idea of torture, you may be better served looking for something with a little more adventure and activity. Nothing beats escaping from the hustle and bustle of a busy city to enjoy the wide open spaces and fresh air of the great outdoors. Below are three great ideas for holidays that will give you some fresh air and allow you to properly stretch your legs out, free from the shackles of your 9 to 5 desk job.

National parks
If being at one with nature, experiencing breathtaking views, and seeing wildlife up close and in its natural habitat appeals to you, then National Parks are the desirable destination for you. No matter what country you hail from or are visiting, there is a huge list of national parks you need to visit that can provide memories to last a lifetime. From the world-famous Yellowstone National Park and Grand Canyon in the USA to some of the ones you may not have heard about in Chile and Tanzania. The UK even has several nature reserves dotted around that you could regularly visit on the weekends. There is accommodation, walking tours, and so much more to experience at all of these places, so why not consider putting a few on your list of locations to visit. Be sure to have your camera at the ready though, as many of these stunning locations demand documentation.
Activity Centres
If you’re a bit more of a rough-and-ready explorer, with a craving for an adrenaline rush, you could consider an activity centre. Many of these will be based in the countryside or situated within National parks, so you potentially get to kill two birds with one stone. They offer a range of activities for the thrill-seeker in you. You could be rock climbing in the morning and caving in the afternoon. There are plenty of different packages and locations. Some are entirely man-made and offer obstacle courses and high ropes courses; some utilise the countryside around them, most are a mix of both. Many offer family-friendly activities that are suitable for younger children, but if you are looking for a challenge worthy of your experience, there will be those that can accommodate your needs.
Cycle touring
For the hardcore adventurer and outdoor enthusiast, there is cycle touring. In essence, you jump on a bike perfect for your activities, grab a bag filled with essentials, and cycle off towards the horizon. These kinds of holidays are great to foster a minimalist lifestyle, as you don’t want to be carrying around excess weight when you’re cycling for six or seven hours a day. Many enthusiasts even go so far as to have titanium, multi-functional cutlery and homemade portable camping stoves. This kind of trip is for fans of real camping. You cycle till you get tired, then you pitch up for the night in a field or forest. You get up the next day and do it all again. You can plan your route around ‘proper’ camping sites to allow you to wash and recuperate every couple of days, but this is predominantly a holiday for those wanting to escape humanity and seek solace in nature.
A Fishing Getaway
If you like to stay in one location with an activity that will clear your mind and help you to appreciate nature in all its glory, a fishing getaway may be for you. Some lakes offer lodges and cabins to stay in for a more comfortable experience, or you can just throw a tent and sleeping bag on your back and camp next to the river. If you are more fond of a night fishing experience, the latter may be more appealing. You can take a few friends and a couple of beers, or go it alone for some ultimate peace and quiet. You can even stay at one of the best-rated fishing resorts in the world based in the Cook Islands and Samoa. Just make sure you’re not so relaxed you fall asleep whilst fishing, as fish may get away with your finest rod.
There you have it, three fantastic alternatives to a typical lazy beach holiday that will leave you feeling refreshed and regenerated. There are plenty of options available depending on your specific interests, but with a bit of research, you’ll be able to find the perfect adventure getaway for you.
